INfo & INsight: Got Publishing?

Pasted Graphic 1
What is a CD really? Or a tape, LP and 8-track but an expensive marketing tool for an artist to attract consumers to their live shows and merchandise (sources of revenue that dominates an artist’s income). So, considering consumers are no longer “consuming” CDs, how are we now experiencing music?

A recent survey carried out by Park Associates, (a market research and consulting firm focused on all product and service segments that are "digital" or provide connectivity within the home), has stated that approximately two-thirds of the American and Canadian broadband households, (isn’t that every household these days, who has dial up anymore? If you do, my heart bleeds for you), regularly use the PC to experience music while at home. A further one-third, it is reported, uses their television to listen to music.

John Barrett, Director of Research at Parks Associates, says “iPods are sexy, but not everyone has one. TVs are ubiquitous and increasingly capable of delivering a range of content, especially with new features like digital music delivery and place-shifting services. This is just the tip of the iceberg for TV applications.”

So it seems people are experiencing music through different channels, the lowest common denominator in both mediums? Movies, TV shows and commercials. So, how does an artist try to expose their music to the consumer in a bid to fuel their various revenue streams, in light of the decline of their previously dominant marketing tool?

Got publishing?

Traditionally music publishing is the contractual relationship between a songwriter or music composer and a music publisher, whereby the writer assigns part or all of his or her music copyrights to the publisher in exchange for the publisher's commercial exploitation of the music.

Innovation Entertainment offers the chance to get an artist or songwriter’s material placed in movies, TV shows, commercials and other multi-media, (including web-based content), projects on a non-exclusive basis.

This means that, unlike the traditional publishing deal, the songwriter retains all the rights to their songs but can still exploit the financial gains of potential licensing placements along with extra exposure for their art.
